Skills and Knowledge for Young People
Knowledge for Development without Borders (KFDWB) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which was established in 2014 and is based in Vienna, Austria. KFDWB to equip people with the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda. KFDWB currently places an emphasis on ICT training and in the long-term wishes to expand to provide other types of training. KFDWB engages with other NGOs, especially in developing countries, for these purposes; it also strives to equip in a more direct sense, children and young adults with the skills and knowledge to contribute to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and therefore realize their role as empowered global citizens. This ties directly in with capacity-building and creating a “sense of ownership” of the goals.
KFDWB has identified the importance of this issue in two of its seven stated goals, namely:
• Share relevant knowledge and information to empower and help local citizens to know, understand, secure and enforce their roles, responsibilities, and engagements for the success of the SDGs.
• Motivate and empower local citizens to set up their own sustainable development initiatives, getting them actively involved in local development challenges.
KFDWB is also cognizant of its own role in the 2030 Agenda and through its activities also wishes to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. A particularly relevant Goal in this regard is SDG 4 – Quality Education- and more specifically the target outlined in SDG 4.7:
By 2030 ensure all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development Sustainable Development by definition looks to future generations and for this reason it is crucial to the educate, engage and listen to the perspective of children and young adults regarding the 2030 Agenda. This can be facilitated by embracing new media and e-learning opportunities.
What KFDWB Wants To Do
To avoid to reinvent the wheel, KFDWB will take time to research ongoing SDGs Activities. Among the other activities KFDWB will develop videos using e-learning software describing each SDG and what skills and development training can contribute towards its achievement. KFDWB´s role work in this area needs to be spelled out and celebrated. Each goal will be examined separately for the purposes of simplicity but not in a silo-based approach – thus a video on the interlinking nature of the SDGs will be made. There will be an effort to differentiate KFDWB´s videos from those of other organizations. Some initial ideas include: making reference to the specific activities of NGOs affiliated with KFDWB as outlined in the “Training Reports” identified on the KFDWB website; emphasizing the importance of ICT skills. The videos will also include areas where KFDWB hopes to explore in the future e.g. peace ambassador training.
• Motivate young people to contribute to the existing KFDWB forum. Young people will be invited to share their responses to the videos. The videos may also suggest challenges for young people which they can respond to via the forum. A link should be provided at the end of the videos for this purpose.
• Upload the videos on a designated page on the KFDWB website; promote them on the facebook/twitter accounts; create a playlist on youtube.
